You want reliable heating and air. After all, your air conditioning and heating system is the hardest-working part of your house and what keeps your home’s comfort levels optimal.
It’s responsible for much more than temperature—and most ac systems can’t handle that well. It’s so rare to have reliable heating and air that some people even believe that you should expect your house to be uncomfortably hot during summer or cold during winter.
Many people also think that uneven temperatures in different rooms, humidity, and damp air are “normal.” Well, they’re not. Those are all signs of your ac not doing its job.
Here’s what you should expect a reliable heating and air system to do. And when it does all this, you can’t believe you’ve ever lived without real ac.
1. A reliable heating and air unit should keep the right temperature automatically
All you need to do is set the thermostat, and the system will get the temperature right.
One of the clearest issues of poor air conditioning and heating systems is their inability to keep the temperature right. It’s their most obvious job, but still they can’t deal with hot days and cold nights.
Trouble sleeping is the most common issue people run into year after year. And many people just settle for complaining about how poorly they slept because of temperature and think they can’t easily change it.
During summer you struggle to sleep well because your body rightfully thinks it’s in danger. If your body temperature gets up to 104°F, you’re very close to death (that’s why it’s often so difficult to sleep when you have a fever). As soon as your body temperature starts to rise, your body will try to keep you awake, so you can do something about the heat before it’s too late.
But as you might know, there isn’t much you can do to cool down when your home is just too hot. Of course, if your A/C did its job, heat wouldn’t be an issue.
During the winter, coldness is the issue. The heating system struggles to keep the house warm enough to be comfortable.
And just like when you get hot, your body sees any drop of temperature as an immediate threat and won’t let you sleep.
Extra blankets might help you get to sleep, but they might later wake you up because you get too hot. And waking up to a cold house isn’t a great feeling no matter how well you sleep.
2. A reliable heating and air unit should keep even temperature in every room
In many households, one room becomes the “family room” during summer. It’s not because people would like the room. It’s because that one room is the only one where the temperature is at least a little cooler than elsewhere.
Uneven temperatures mean there’s a design flaw or technical issue in your A/C system. When done right, every room in your home is comfortable.
“Load calculations,” ductwork measurements, and other similar steps in the system design process are necessary. Without them no one can know what kind of air conditioner or heater works in your house.
Still, we haven’t heard of any other company in the Atlanta area doing those tests before selling a new system. Worst case is that the new equipment won’t improve comfort at all because other issues weren’t considered.
We never plan (or sell) new systems without doing the proper groundwork. So, for example, our customers never buy an unnecessarily large air conditioner that would be expensive to run and dry the indoor air uncomfortably.
3. A reliable heating and air unit should control the humidity for comfort and to avoid hidden mold growth
A poor ac system will make your house either too dry or too humid.
Dryness causes all sorts of annoyances like itchy eyes, dry skin, and sore throat. If your house is too dry for a longer time (like during winter), it can increase the risk of catching a cold, flu, and other infections. And it can make infections last longer, too.
As a side note, using humidifiers to counteract dryness caused by poor air conditioning isn’t a good idea. The warm, humid inside of a humidifier is a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. So, the moisture it emits isn’t just water. It’s toxic mist, which you breathe in. It’s no surprise humidifiers are linked to all sorts of lung problems and asthma.
On the other hand, excessive humidity is even worse than dryness. Humidity is naturally high during summer, and if it gets in your house, it helps mold, dust mites, and fungi grow faster. You and your family members breathe all that in.
A vast majority of people with respiratory infections (everything from common cold to pneumonia) doesn’t know that their problem could be related to mold exposure. Often their doctors aren’t aware of that either, so they never get the right treatment. That’s true even though about 25% of US homes have mold (and most people never realize it).
4. A reliable heating and air unit should bring in fresh air (but not too much), so you get more things done and don’t feel tired
Your air conditioner has to bring in new air from outside. If it doesn’t bring in enough of it (or if it doesn’t replace all the air in your home), you’re likely to notice it by feeling tired.
So, if you feel tired at home—and not just after an especially hard day at work—odds are you’re not breathing fresh air.
Lack of fresh air also significantly decreases productivity and your ability to think clearly and quickly. According to studies, the cost of improving air quality in offices is at most 1-10% of the value of the increased productivity (and that’s true even if the air quality would’ve been good to begin with).
So, if you want to get more things done at home, getting more fresh air in can be one of the easiest and most effective things you can do.
But if your ac system replaces the indoor air too quickly, it creates other issues:
- It forces the ac to work harder to keep the temperature right.
- It makes controlling humidity more difficult—or impossible.
- It lets more pollution in (which is especially bad in Atlanta).
- It lets more pollen and other allergens in.
- It (usually) means the A/C is spending unnecessarily much energy, which shows up in your utility bills (this is partly why a well-planned A/C system might save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in just smaller utility bills).
When your A/C system is designed correctly, it brings in just the right amount of outside air to keep indoor air fresh. But it also cleans it on the way in, so you don’t breathe in pollution and allergens.
5. A reliable heating and air unit should clean the air to protect your family’s health
Unclean indoor air leads (or at least contributes) to very common and serious health issues. The most severe issues are asthma, allergies, and toxin-induced problems.
Asthma
If you don’t have asthma, it might be difficult to imagine what it’s really like.
Imagine someone heavy sitting on your chest. You’d feel uncomfortable immediately, and your mind would likely start panicking in a few seconds. If it was an asthma attack, it could last minutes. And that would be a “mild episode.” An asthma attack can last hours or even days.
You might be surprised by how common asthma is. For example, 12% of children in Georgia have asthma (even more in Atlanta), which leads to ~3,000 hospital visits per year. And every day, 10 Americans die from asthma attacks.
Good air conditioning (with the right kind of cleaning system) can reduce the amount of asthma triggers in the air by a huge amount. It won’t cure asthma. But it can make life—and breathing—easy. And it can help avoid triggering asthma in the first place, so your family members might never need to experience it.
Dust mites
Dust mites are incredibly small (about 20% of the thickness of your hair). But there are huge numbers of them (3,000-15,000 in an ounce of dust). And because they’re everywhere, they cause a lot of allergic reactions.
People often think that a clean house doesn’t have dust mites. That’s not true at all. Vacuuming and other typical cleaning won’t get rid of dust mites.
But a good air conditioning system can filter the air and remove the dust mites that are floating in the air. And more importantly, the system can keep the humidity level right, so dust mites have a hard time surviving.
Pet allergy
Pet allergy is one of the most common allergies. And it’s perhaps the most heartbreaking because it so often means letting go of a dog or cat who was a loved family member. At worst, children who get allergic feel responsible for the pet’s disappearance and blame themselves for it.
A severe pet allergy can rarely be solved with air conditioning. But when the A/C system cleans the air properly, so much of the allergy-causing proteins (it’s not the fur or skin people are allergic to) can be filtered out that the pet can stay home in many cases.
Pollen
Pollen is different than dust mite and pet allergies because it doesn’t come from inside the house. Pollen comes in from outside through open windows, doors, and (poor) air conditioning.
If your A/C system works as it should, you can keep the windows closed, and the system cleans the air it lets in. You might still want to avoid going out, but at least you’re comfortable at home.
No need to wake up in the middle of the night because of pollen and suffer for hours while waiting for the medicine to kick in.
Mold
Mold is often thought of as an allergy—and it can be that. But allergic reactions are rarely as severe as many of the other issues mold can create.
According to some expert estimates, about 25% of US homes have mold. And most people don’t even think about the possibility that their health issues might be caused by mold in their home (and often neither do doctors).
Some mycotoxins (the toxins molds produce) are far more toxic than even heavy metals. They also affect more parts of your body because they can fool your immune system—and at the same time, they suppress the immune system to make their spreading even easier.
Here are some of the common mold-related health issues people struggle with:
- Lung issues: Mold causes countless lung issues ranging from manageable to deadly. And those problems can travel elsewhere in your body, too. For example, lung infections can spread to other organs.
- Memory loss: Mold can create problems in your brain (especially when the exposure goes on for years). Memory issues are just one way those can show up.
- Concentration issues: Just like memory loss, trouble concentrating can be caused by mold affecting the brain. Children are especially vulnerable to mold and all kinds of brain damage because their brains are still developing.
- Depression: Mold can cause depression. Interestingly, one widely published US study about this (from Brown University) was designed to disprove the idea that there would be a connection between mold and depression. Needless to say, they “failed” at their original goal.
- Cancer: Mold can cause cancer. A specific mold toxin (aflatoxin mycotoxin) is actually one of the most powerful known carcinogens (cancer creating substance).
- Heart issues: Mold can also create heart problems. When the toxins from mold find their way into your blood, the problems quickly spread to your heart.
- Liver issues: Some mycotoxins from mold can even cause acute, often fatal, liver injury.
Damage to the central nervous system: Some mold toxins are neurotoxins and directly attack the central nervous system. This might sound rare, but about 70% of people with confirmed toxigenic mold exposure show significant neurotoxicity. - Immune system damage: Mold sometimes attacks your immune system. It can even destroy it completely down to your bone marrow, which often leads to a painful death or at least a long hospitalization.
- Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS): According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, some SIDSs may be caused by mold. There are also many cases of infants dying verifiably due to mold exposure.
There are still countless other health issues directly linked to mold. Here are just a few: learning difficulties, gastrointestinal disturbances and GERD, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, and thyroid regulation problems.
A well-planned air conditioning system makes it much less likely that mold can grow in your home by keeping the temperature and humidity correct. And it moves more of the toxics out and filters them from the air, so your family breathes less of them in.
Even a good ac system won’t fix a serious mold issue, but it’s needed for keeping your home mold-free.
Radon
Many people have never even heard of Radon. But it’s the second leading cause of lung cancer in US and causes ~21,000 deaths per year. Health officials have recommended radon testing for every house in US for decades because of the significant and very common health effects.
Radon is a natural, radioactive, colorless, and odorless gas. And the Atlanta area has some of the highest levels of radon in the country.
Technically, air conditioning (or air filtration) systems can’t catch radon (the particles are too small even for the best system). But a well-planned A/C system can move a significant amount of radon out of the house, which makes the indoor air safer.
Lead
Lead is extremely toxic. Even tiny amounts of it can be enough to create incredibly severe health issues.
And the worst part is that it’s all around the country in our homes. Even though we’ve known that lead is dangerous for a century, it was used commonly in US until 1970s (thanks to lead industry lobbying).
Millions of homes still have lead paint, which causes severe issues—especially in children who are exposed to the dust (for example, lower IQs and concentration issues).
No air conditioning system can replace proper repair work. But keeping humidity levels ideal (less flaking paint) and replacing the indoor air at the right pace (more lead dust moves out) can still help.
Pollution
Pollution can contribute to problems in your lungs, heart, liver, brain, and other parts of your body.
The Atlanta area is among the most polluted in the country, so we’re even more affected than most people. And perhaps surprisingly, pollution levels are usually much higher indoors than outside. That’s because the air doesn’t get replaced as it should.
A well-designed air conditioning system can keep the air clean of just about all pollution by circulating the air all around the house and cleaning it at the same time.
To say that I am impressed with the system is an understatement! After the first week, I noticed the old house smell was starting to go away (house was built in early 60s, dirt crawlspace). Couple weeks later, noticed that all the pet hair and dust bunnies that would accumulate between sweeping and vacuuming were cut by more than half. 6. A reliable heating and air unit is NOT a safety hazard
40,000+ hospital visits, 7,000+ fires, and dozens of deaths per year in US involve air conditioning. And those numbers don’t include indirect involvement (asthma, allergens, and toxins).
All electrical equipment can fail and cause danger. But old, often poorly installed, A/C systems create much more trouble than what’s reasonable.
Partly it’s because your A/C system runs all the time and it uses a lot of electricity (especially if it’s older). Moving pieces and heat don’t make A/Cs any safer either.
Professional maintenance and upgrading the system if it’s older remove the hazard almost completely.
7. A reliable heating and air unit saves you money—likely hundreds or thousands of dollars
“Normal” (and low-efficiency) air conditioning systems are very expensive to run. Older systems are even more costly.
A high-efficiency system (like the ones our customers tend to prefer) often cut hundreds or even thousands of dollars off their utility bills. In some cases, the savings just about end up matching the price of the new system.
But unreasonably big utility bills aren’t the only reason older A/Cs are expensive to use. The old systems’ maintenance costs are often around $500 per year (or more as the system gets older).
Even systems that haven’t needed significant maintenance before can suddenly get extremely expensive. Many of our customers decide to get a new system after they’ve already spent hundreds or even thousands of dollars to keep an old system alive with repairs.
Another part of your air conditioning and heating system, which people often forget, are the air vents. If they aren’t the right size, or they’re otherwise faulty, they make the whole system much less efficient. And that increases costs significantly.
But the final part is the heat efficiency of your house itself. It can make a drastic difference in how much you pay for heating.
Usually improving insulation isn’t reasonable because it’s incredible expensive and inefficient. But there’s a very low-cost option that might reduce your utility costs by 40%.
Fast foam insulation
Normal insulation methods have several problems:
- It takes several days (or even a couple of weeks) to do the insulation.
- During the insulation process, the indoor walls are torn off and there’s dust, dirt, and often even hazardous materials inside.
- The insulation process is very expensive (often thousands of dollars).
- Cellulose and blown-in fiberglass insulations get stuck to pipes and all other structural obstructions, so they often only get to a small portion of the wall cavities in the first place.

After a few minutes, you’re sweating and the noise has gotten impossible to neglect.

What are the odds of you liking the house when the visit is shadowed by uncomfortable heat and noise?
If you somehow love the house otherwise, maybe you offer to buy it at a lower price to compensate for the need for a new A/C. But it’s unlikely.

When something as essential as the temperature isn’t just right, we can’t get that comfortable feeling. If the temperature is just a little off, we might not be aware of how uncomfortable we feel before we’re sweating or shivering.
So, even though it’s rare that a good air conditioning system would directly increase the price of a house by several thousand dollars, it can make even more of a difference indirectly. The effect comes from how much easier it is to get people to like the house. When they feel the house is comfortable, they’re willing to pay much more for it.
And the higher the utility costs, the less people are willing to pay for the house. That’s another way a good A/C system can indirectly increase the price people are happy to pay for your house.
9. A reliable heating and air unit works reliably month after month, year after year
If your A/C is older, you might justifiably be thinking, “When will it stop working? Hopefully not in the middle of a hot/cold night. And how much will it cost to fix it then?”
There’s no good reason to worry about that. Especially if the system isn’t even currently really keeping you comfortable, just waiting for it to break completely is not a good tradeoff.

So, if you’d like your friends to enjoy coming over, making sure your home is comfortable is a good start.
And a great A/C system is even a pretty good conversation starter with your neighbors, too.
If your A/C is noisy or smelly, it’s already broken
Noise and smells are yet more things people sometimes just put up with. But they mean the system is already broken.
Noise usually means there’s a mechanical issue that will at best make the system shut down—and at worst can lead to fires and other much more serious problems.
Smell, on the other hand, usually means the cooling liquid is leaking—or there’s some other similar issue that will get worse and worse until the system stops working completely. Note that keeping the system on when all the liquids aren’t at the right levels can lead to the whole system breaking down.
We recently moved to this area and purchased a home with a 20-year-old air conditioning and heating system with a number of age related problems. How does the planning and installing process works?
- Call us (678-721-6992 any day 7:30am-7pm). Ask us any questions you have.
- We’ll come to your home to do the necessary “load calculations” to make sure we choose the right size system (not too big, which is what many people pay for because no one else in the industry does proper load calculations).
- We’ll go through all the things you want and figure out what would be the best system for you.
- You choose from a few options we planned based on the calculations and your requests.
- We’ll schedule the installing for the next day—or the next week. You can choose whatever day is best for you.
- Our installers (usually two of us) come to you at the time we’ve agreed and go through everything with the person who planned the system.
- We then install the new system in place. This includes sealing the ductwork (so the airflow doesn’t get lost), flushing the refrigerant lines to the manufacturer’s specifications, and other steps that make sure the system works right for a very long time.
- Once the system has been running for 15 minutes, we adjust the refrigerant and perform tests to make sure the system is working correctly. We also check the airflow in every room to make sure they all warm up and cool down correctly.
- We clean up everything, which includes vacuuming the floors, so you don’t need to spend time cleaning up after us.
- The person who originally planned the system goes through the system again with you to make sure everything is as you wanted. They will also contact you the next day and a week later to make sure everything is working just right—it’s also another chance for you to ask any questions you might have.
All throughout the process, you can ask any one of us any questions you have—and we’ll do our best to answer clearly. You don’t have to wait for the person who plans the system to come back to get answers, but of course, you can call them directly, too.

I live in a 3 story tall house and it only has one heating and air conditioning system. The worst part about it is that the thermostat is on the main level and the bedrooms are upstairs. So of course the bedrooms are way too hot in the summer time to be able to sleep comfortably at night. Knowing that my system is 13 years old I talked to a friend of mine and decided to call South Air to come out and see if there was anything they could do. Dylan came out and looked over the current system and the situation with the hot bedrooms. He made a recommendation of zoning it and promised increased comfort in all rooms of the home. The guys that performed the work were great and on time. I am very satisfied with the job they did. My AC is broken. How quickly can you install a new ac system?
Most of the time, if you call in the morning, we’ll get to you the same day. And if it fits your schedule, we can usually get the entire new system in place within a day of the planning visit.
How does your 100% satisfaction guarantee work?
If you aren’t happy with our work (and you have two years to decide if you are happy), we come and fix whatever isn’t right.
Even if we need to reinstall a system or do other work like that, you get it free.
And if we can’t make things right, we buy back the system and refund your whole payment.
How much can I save on utility bills with a new ac system?
It depends on your current system. But if it’s even a little older or not a high-efficiency system, you can save hundreds or thousands of dollars. Our foam insulation can save even 40% of your utility costs, so it pays itself back manyfold.
